We teach ongoing classes in traditional styles of drumming, dancing and singing in Seattle and on Vashon Island. Weekly classes can be a solid foundation for study and growth. Some of our classes are offered through the University of Washington's Experimental College. Others, we offer independently. We've also taught after-school classes through local school districts. Currently we are offering classes in West African djembe and dunun drumming, Afro-Cuban and Afro-Haitian conga drumming, Afro-Brazilian Percussion, and Afro-Brazilian dance. Check out our calendar page.
We love teaching teachers. We reach far more students that way. Teachers want to bring more rhythm into their classroom, but lack the experience and expertise. We provide the resources and support that teachers need. We have taught workshops for Head Start, Kindermusik, and K-12 teachers, as part of artist residencies, intensive workshops, and certification programs. For the past two years, we have taught traditional rhythms, songs, and dances at a Summer Institute for teacher training.
I love the sense of community that comes from drumming, dancing, and singing together in groups, but we also offer private instruction and consultation on dozens of different drums and percussion instruments, rhythms, dances, and songs from many musical traditions, cultural and historical backgrounds, and the reading and writing of rhythm. Sometimes this is the best way to learn very specific skills and information not covered in our classes or to get help with a particular project.
