Cross-cultural percussionist vocalist Geoff Johns is a dynamic performer and enthusiastic teacher. He uses music to bring people together in celebration of life. In his work, he integrates and articulates a wealth of knowledge about the historical, cultural, psychological, and spiritual context of world music traditions. He plays a vast array of instruments and sings in several languages. He has traveled widely, studying and performing with such master musicians as John Amira, Zakir Hussein, Kobla Ladzekpo, Mamady Keita, Erica Azim, and Jorge Alabe. He has developed a comprehensive system of notation for non-European percussion and produced three CDs: DRUM! How to Play the Rhythms of Africa and Latin America; Bakongo Drumming Music for Dancers; and The Conga Drummer's Friend.
Carol Lutra-Johns is a cross-cultural dancer, vocalist, educator and choreographer. She is a charismatic, joyful and energetic performer, and a supportive, accessible, inspiring teacher. Through her work, she connects people to joyful and empowered self-expression, and to the transformative experience of traditional dance forms. These include Afro-Brazilian, Afro-Caribbean, West African, and Zimbabwean styles. She has studied with many internationally acclaimed performers, including Yusef Koumbassa, Dora Oliviera, Julia Chigamba, Beto Guimaraes, Ettiene Cakpo, Jorge Alabe, and Erica Azim. She teaches students of all ages, abilities and learning styles.
She currently serves as an artist-in-residence in Washington State Public Schools, and offers ongoing adult classes through the University of Washington's Experimental College.
Carol also provides Huna Hawaiian massage at West Seattle Yoga and Ayurveda.
