Afro-Cuban Styles

We teach Afro-Cuban rhythms, songs, and dances from the folkloric, popular, and sacred traditions, including bembe, yesa, arara, conga de comparsa, rumba guaguanco, rumba columbia, mozambique, son-montuno, mambo, cha-cha, songo, guiro, and abakwa. We also teach meringue (from the Dominican Republic) and bomba (from Puerto Rico). The songs are in Spanish and Yoruba (a West African language) and are often sung in a call-and-response style. The dances include choreography for couples, parades, and the rituals of Santeria, a neo-African religion.

The rhythms are played on drums and percussion instruments, including tumbadoras (congas), bongos (a pair of small hand drums), timbales (a pair of single-headed toms), bass drums (bombo), cowbells (compana), large gourd rattles (shekere), a block of bamboo (gua-gua), a pair of small hardwood sticks (clave), maracas (rattles), and a gourd scraper (guiro).
