We teach traditional and contemporary forms of Afro-Brazilian music and dance, including samba, samba-reggae, samba hip-hop, ijexa, maracatu, cafezal, maculele, baiao, coco de roda, and frevo. These rhythms are played on a wide variety of drums and percussion instruments. The songs are in Portuguese and Yoruba (a West African language). The dances include choreography for individuals and groups, for parades, the stage, and the rituals of candomble, a neo-African religion.
Afro-Brazilian rhythms make use of many different instruments, including large bass drums (surdo) played with mallets and hands, snare drums (caixa), high-pitched toms (repenique), hand drums similar to congas and djembes (atabaque and timbau), double bells (agogo), small frame drums (tamborim), cylindrical shakers (ganza), scrapers (reco-reco), a musical bow (berimbau), tambourines (pandeiro), friction drums (cuica) and a three-toned whistle (apito). Many of these instruments are easy for beginners to play.
